The Mirror

Begun in 2002 as my thesis, The Mirror explores a fictional reality where the middle-class of a fictional Boston has lost the ability to find housing close to their jobs in the city; necessitating long, multi-hour commutes.

The city has no land left for new construction and existing choices are prohibitively expensive

The only alternative is to build in the wasted space between and around the existing buildings. As part of the exploration I wrote a zoning code “plugin” (named the Hyper-Density Ordinance) that inserts itself into Boston’s zoning code, allowing and providing rules for building in the city’s wasted spaces. I have renamed this project the urBAN system (short for Urban Banyan System) and periodically revisit it.
